Bhangra in xlr8r magazine

bhangra.gif

As South Asian dance music pops up everywhere–from BBC radio programs to Jay-Z tracks–the real revolution is brewing in Britain’s cities. Desi beats–a hard-stepping culture clash where UK bhangra music meets 2-step, drum & bass, R&B and hip-hop–has become the sound of our young century. Here’s how bhangra went from farmer’s music to the top of the pops.

Be a Def Jux Street Soldier

defcon.jpg

To all prospective Def Jux Street Soldiers:

We at Definitive Jux are actively recruiting young, hungry & dedicated patriots to further our battle for the hearts and minds of hip hop fans everywhere. The time has come to enlist troopers in our quest to build the most elite and effective street team ever: DEFCON.

Our mission is to disseminate the word (& the music) via the people who know it the best - real fans like YOU. If selected, you'll be working as one of several cells distributed throughout the country and will be trained and geared for both quick-strike special ops as well as prolonged movements in the trenches. Each operative will be fully briefed on mission coordinates and debriefed afterwards by Officer-in-Charge: Special Agent Drake (Definitive Jux). We'll rely on your skills, savvy, & determination to implement and carry out each objective, be it strafing events with promo material, blowing up clubs with new releases or conducting relief efforts for the music-starved masses.

Enclosed is a DEFCON street soldier application. Once submitted, the higher ranks will review and separate the weak from the true. We have no intention of trading quality for quantity. Throughout your time served as a cadet, your primary objective you will be to inform the masses of upcoming releases, special events and tour information. Key targets include college campuses & high schools as well as cities and towns outside our major markets. You will be supplied with all the tools needed to complete your missions (i.e. hitting retail and record stores, college festivals, parties, shows, etc).

For reconnaissance purposes, we ask that each soldier be armed with a camera (digital being the weapon of choice) and notepad to keep records of each task completed. We count on you to carry out your duties thoroughly and with honor. Compiled reports will be turned in by deadlines set by your Officer-in-Charge. In return for their hard work & dedication, soldiers will receive free music, shirts, hats, posters, stickers, etc., plus mad props and the undying appreciation of the Definitive Jux Squadron.

Once again, thank you for your interest and your willingness to step to the front lines and represent. We will contact you once it is determined you are DEFCON material and ready to take the next step.

Out.

'Tis the week of Thanksgiving, and crowds are thronging video-game stores to line up three deep at demo machines to check out the holiday season's crop of new titles.

What a crop it is. Yes, long-awaited titles such as Half-Life 2 and Doom 3 won't see daylight until next year -- but who cares? There is a vast selection of inviting new titles that will satisfy virtually any taste -- from hard-core virtual warriors and racers to families looking for something to do together on a lazy holiday afternoon.
