Guardian Football Chalkboards

chalkboards

Congrats to the Guardian newspaper for recently launching a rather sweet on-line application called Chalkboards that allows users to create and compare virtual Chalkboards. With over three years of football stats from the UK’s Premier League to pull from, users can begin to draw some interesting comparisions between the different matches. Every shot, pass, tackle, and block from the last three years is available for users to scrutinize, analyze, and agonize over. Users can create their own chalkboards and share it with the community.

What a great way to leverage years and years of existing content and spin it into something uber-valuable for the users. Someone in the U.S. needs to pitch this same exact idea right quick to ESPN.com, NBA.com, and MLB.com… and not just for the web, include some mobile love in the pitch as well for the fans that need to know when they’re in the stands.

Amazing Plastic Logic eReader

Coming off the heels of the recent release of the Amazon Kindle 2, the Plastic Logic Reader was being showcased at last week’s Tools of Change for Publishing Conference in New York. Although the Plastic Logic Reader is still about a year away from being released to the public, it’s already being touted as a possible Kindle killer.

The Plastic Logic Reader is using a proprietary technology in plastic electronics to create a range of products enabling information access, organization, and consumption. The company expects to launch pilots and trials with key partners in the second half of 2009 with a huge push in 2010. The product is differentiated by a stunning form factor of 8.5 x 11-inch. The Plastic Logic reader features a big readable display and it’s thinner than a pad of paper, lighter than many business periodicals, and offers a high-quality reading experience – better than alternatives of paper or other electronic readers on the market today.

The reader supports a full range of business document formats, such as Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint, and Adobe PDFs, as well as newspapers, periodicals and books. It has an easy gesture-based user interface and powerful software tools that will help business users to organize and manage their information. Users can connect to their information either wired or wirelessly and store thousands of documents on the device. The reader incorporates E Ink technology for great readability and features low power consumption and long battery life.

NYTimes Article Skimmer

nytimes_skim_reader

The NYTimes just released a prototype app called the Article Skimmer that tries to recreate the experience of skimming the physical newspaper. The app has a nice streamlined interface that allows users to quickly scan the top headlines of each section in the newspaper. Unfortunately, once you click on a headline you get whisked away to a standard NYTimes page. In that respect it reminds me a bit of the Google Newsmap created back in 2004 by Marcus Weskamp. In that experience, when users landed on the site they received a super simple, effective, and visually rich interface for skimming headlines, but were then linked out to a completely different website and completely different interface to read the articles. It will be interesting to see if the NYTimes decides to expand the Article Skimmer to embed the articles in the same interface. Maybe that is phase 2 for them.

Anyway, I love seeing all of the interesting stuff that the NYTimes is doing digitally. We’ve all read the stories about impending doom for the newspaper. Hopefully, one of these digital innovations will stick and help the paper ‘re-invent’ themselves because a world without the NY Times would be a much less informed and interesting one.

streetpeeper

StreetPeeper.com, the global street fashion blog that has featured some of the best street style from cities like New York, Berlin, Paris, London, Tokyo, and more for the past two years is re-launching it’s site and they’re throwing a big ‘ole party in NYC to celebrate on February 16th @ the Tribeca Grand Hotel. Do a Facebook search for ‘StreetPeeper Party’ to view all of the details. For all the e-Commerce designers out there, StreetPeeper’s site offers lots of insights into how users prefer to view clothing, by outfits. The coolest feature of StreetPeeper is that all of the photos are tagged by brand so you can tell exactly what everyone is wearing. You can also filter by brand and see how other people around the world are rocking that brand. It’s definitely a time-waster as you could spend hours browsing through all of the various style combinations.
