Netflix Blu-Ray Players — LG BD300 & Samsung BD P2550

netflix_lg

My mission for the New Year is to upgrade my antiquated DVD player with a new Blu-Ray player, but not with just one of those typical stand-alone Blu-Ray players. I’ve had my eye on two particular Blu-Ray players that come equipped with internet services, specifically Netflix and Pandora Radio access. Hardware is no longer the singular prize for gadget heads these days. Nowadays every useful piece of hardware comes with some level of special ‘cloud services’. iPhones come with iTunes access, Canon cameras come with YouTube and Flickr access, why should my Blu-Ray player be any different?

One of the Blu-Ray players that I’ve been scoping out is the LG BD300. It was introduced back in November 2008 by LG as the world’s first Blu-Ray player that streams Netflix instantly into your living room. Through this networked device, users can now access up to 12,000 Netflix movies and TV episodes. In addition to the awesomeness of having access to 12,000 Netflix titles, the Blu-Ray player will play your favorite Blu-Ray movies in Full HD as well as play standard DVDs in near-HD upscaled to 1080p.

The other Blu-Ray player that I’ve been tracking is the Samsung BD P2550 which not only supports full Netflix access like the LG BD300, but it also supports full Pandora radio streaming. The general industry consensus around this player is that the Blu-Ray image quality is excellent and that the player is well-featured. There are only some minor disc compatibility issues which shouldn’t cause too much concern amongst potential buyers. The Samsung BD P2550 is about $50 more expensive, but well worth it given it’s access to the Pandora radio streaming service.

Writing on the Wall, a BMX movie by Nike 6.0

[via the Nike 6.0 site]
The four-man crew of Garrett Reynolds, Dennis Enarson, Nigel Sylvester, and Mike Spinner spent over a year living out of suitcases to film the first Nike 6.0 BMX movie, Writing on the Wall. From 4-wheelin’ to 4-star, ditches to public parks, the 6.0 crew scoured the corners of the Earth to discover the undiscovered and lay down new lines. Battling school calendars, narcolepsy, ridiculous competition schedules, and border patrol; the crew rallied to capture amazing riding. Writing on the Wall showcases the distinct style of each rider, from Nigel’s street skills to Spinner’s technical prowess; from Dennis who rides anything at any time, to Garrett’s assault on cities around the world. The 6.0 crew represents the next generation of riders driving the progression of BMX. Enjoy the tour, as one of today’s most diverse BMX teams travels to Beijing, Dubai, Barcelona, NYC, Australia, and more.

Social Souvenir

[description via the site]
Social Souvenir is a community project by Danish designer Sebastian Campion. The concept is based on 300 T-shirts that are exhibited and put on sale at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Roskilde, Denmark. Each T-shirt is imprinted with a text fragment inspired by 15 renowned artists represented in the museum’s collection, such as Yoko Ono, Erik Satie, Marcel Duchamp and Per Højholt.

Visitors can buy a T-shirt of their own choice, the only condition being that they share a bit of personal information about themselves, or more precisely: their name and address. When paying for the T-shirt at the museum-shop, the information is automatically mapped in Google Maps, thereby making it possible to see where each T-shirt ends up after leaving the museum.

During the course of the exhibition, the 300 T-shirts will gradually disappear from the physical museum space only to re-appear on the web. Consequently, by buying a T-shirt visitors do not simply get a personal piece of the installation – they also help contribute to its collective development and distribution.

The aim of Social Souvenir is:
1) To re-activate the museum’s collection and make it available to the public in a new way using new forms of media.
2) To create social links between (random) museum visitors, thereby creating a stronger sense of community.
